Forest gardening

Are you curious about permaculture and more specifically forest gardening?Roots & permaculture logo

Forest gardening is a way of growing food where nature does most of the work for you. Modelled on natural woodland, crops are grown in different layers from high and medium-sized canopy to roots, ground cover and climbers.

Through careful planning plants are chosen which have beneficial effects on each other, attract beneficial insects and create a healthy biodiverse-rich system that maintains its own fertility. Once established, your main task will be harvesting!

During this one day course we will go through a simple step by step process on how to simplify designing a forest garden. At the end of this day you will know the steps to make a forest garden and how and where to gather more information to complete your design.

Urban Permaculture

Using Permaculture design tools, underpinned by ethics we can design food growing systems for any environment. So on this one day course we will look at how to grow food in an urban environment. We will explore how to approach urban food growing, what factors need to be considered. We will then look at designing several places in small groups. So if you have a place you want to design, please bring maps and photo’s of your place i.e. roof top garden, small back garden, balcony, indoor spaces.

This one-day introduction will include
• How to manage water wisely
• Nutrient cycles (how to accumulate nutrients and prevent nutrient loss)
• Appropriate plants
• Shade and sun requirements
